How do I change the horn switch inside the steering wheel stalk on a Peugeot 309?
I have removed the steering wheel stalk on the VERY SIMILAR 205. And the 305, 204, 405. And I tried to open the stalk and repair it for the %26quot;high beam%26quot; switch.
IMPOSSIBLE. When you drill out the rivets, and open the stalk, you will find many switches, sliding bars, springs, copper contacts, plastic parts. All assembled to NEVER be disassembled. Six little pieces will fall out when you open it.
Sorry but I have tried and must recommend a new stalk for you. Or at least a second-hand stalk from a good car.
REMOVING THE STALK is easy. DO NOT remove the steering wheel, it is not necessary.
First remove the plastic trim from around the steering wheel. Below the stalk and steering wheel, there are small screws hidden in holes. Be very gentle, because the screws bite into thin delicate plastic tubes. If you break a tube, then your trim will not go firmly back in place, and your plastic will rattle.
Then remove the plastic trim above the stalk. I believe the same screws that you removed from below were connected to the upper plastic in some places. I don't remember if removal of the instrument cluster is also necessary. MAYBE? to help lift the upper trim? You will need a small allen wrench for a hidden allen screw that faces the drivers door. (at least on a left-hand drive car, maybe the UK car too)
The stalk is held in place with only two screws. Disconnect the wires gently by separating the %26quot;connector harness%26quot;. Save the foam rubber dust cover around the stalk.
SECOND solution. Just add another switch for the horn somewhere else. Get in the habit of pushing the new switch.
You sound like you have some mechanical ability.
