Who do I need to notify about steering wheel side change?

I am planing to convert my car to left hand drive.

What do I need to do and who should I notify?

Does it need change in V5?|||Contact the %26quot;Department of Transport%26quot;

Not only will it affect your V5 it will affect you insurance as it is a modified car.

May also be classed as a%26quot;Q%26quot; plate (Try shifting one of them)|||dvla if in uk and insurance company|||Why not just buy a left hooker Pat? plenty around and generally cheaper.

The insurance may go up as they are harder to position correctly on the road for visibility/clearance etc.

I drive LHD cars a lot as part of my job, I%26#039;d just buy one that was built like that in the first place if you can.|||You need to inform the DVLA and your insurance company.

I changed the 4 wheel cylinders on my drum brake set up. but my steering wheel spins when brakes are applied?

The steering wheel spins violently when the brakes are applied. All cylinders changed and bled. Any ideas?|||sounds like one or more of the brakes are adjusted improperly.... only way to check is to jack the vehicle up and rotate all four wheels... they should drag slightly - too much drag would cause it to pull when accelerating, cruising, and stopping... on the other hand if one isn%26#039;t adjusted out enough when the brakes are applied it may not even contact the drum thus causing a pull to the other side... they are very sensitive to adjustment in that sense..... start with the front two wheels since it is jerking the steering wheel - if it were in the rears it shouldn%26#039;t be so noticeable... hope this helps and good luck with it|||You did it wrong. The brakes don%26#039;t work on one side.|||drum breaks are know for this its just part of drum breaks thats why they are no longer used. something is binding. Check the E-break and ajustment.|||when you replaced them did you notice if they are self-adjusting?

if they are when you change the brakes, make them where they are snug when you put on the brake drum. start the car and back up. as your backing up firmly press the brakes, this will automatically set your brakes.....the self adjusters only adjust in reverse.

if this doesnt work then you might need to re-bleed them once agian. sometimes those air bubbles get a little stubborn. start with the rear drivers tire, then the other rear tire. then your front passenger, then drivers front.

if this still doesnt work take hubs back off and make sure your brake assymble is installed correctly.|||Even a small amount of contamination on the shoes, such as brake fluid or oil, will cause it to grab and pull the car in it%26#039;s direction. The drums should be removed so that the shoes can be lightly sanded.

1998 windstar rack and pinion steering, replaced rack with new one now steering wheel flies back and forth?

when I removed the rack a small valve came out from one of the holes that the hoses attach (don%26#039;t know which one) so I have tried both with no change in the steering wheel.|||you have got the pressure and return lines reversed at the rack. be thankful you were not reaching thru the steering when you started it up. saw a co-worker do that and a busted wrist to show for it.the little restrictor goes in the pressure line.

Why wont my steering wheel lock? They changed the ignition switch?

Okay I posted a few days ago and last night. So my car was towed and they changed the ignition switch but now I am told that my steering wheel isnt locking like it should. What else could be the problem?

Also at what tire places can I get good deals on tires?|||They messed some thing up with the ignition switch. You should get it repaired if it is faulty, what if it locks when you are driving? Not saying it will happen but what if??|||If the only issue is that the steering wheel won%26#039;t lock then no big deal, most people don%26#039;t engage the steering lock anyway, check Firestone or Costco for tires|||take your car back to where you had the ignition switch replaced they did not install right

Hi i have a 2000 bmw 323 and i want to change the steering wheel to an Msport multi function wheel?

Could anyone tell me if the wiring is already there for the stereo controls etc if not does anyone know weather you can by a kit to do it

Does anyone know how to change a steering wheel on a ford contour?

Very carefully.;-)

Unless you like handling explosive devices, it%26#039;s best to leave to a professional.

But basically disconnect the battery for a few minutes, pull the 2 bolts for the bag, pull the wire connectors to the bag, then it%26#039;s a bolt that holds it in and you will need a puller (you can rent those from some of the discount part chains) to pull the steering wheel from the shaft as it%26#039;s on there... best to get a book , or better a professional as cutting the air bag wires can possibly produce a big and expensive boom|||Leave it to a pro! The airbag contains an explosive charge that will KILL you if it detonates.

A test on TV a few years ago launched a 55 gallon drum weighing nearly 100 lbs almost 50 feet in the air when an airbag equipped steering wheel was initiated under it.

Airbag equipped steering wheels are a popular target for thieves due to their high replacement cost. When the police raid a chop-shop, the bring the bomb squad with them to handle the airbags. %26#039;Nuff said!|||Dont you mean change the ford contour behind the steering wheel. the steering wheel is about the only thing on a ford contour that shouldnt have to be changed

How easy is it to change the steering wheel pressure hose on a 96 chevy silveradeo 1500 (5.0)?

very easy if it isnt rusty. all you need is an 18mm wrench and some power steering fluid.Oh there may be a 13mm bolt holding the clamp to the frame

I want to change the steering wheel of civic 2002 with the 2006 one.?

Hi,

Is it possible if i change the steering wheel of my civic 2002 with smaller one (2006).?

Of course i need a new airbag.

What will be happen if i change that, the rotation of the wheel will be heavier ?

Do i need to modify the power steering ?

Thanks

|||First call a local junk yard and make sure they are interchangeable and be real careful with the air-bag it can really hurt/kill you

Can I change a steering wheel?

I have a 05 acura tl, but i dont like its steering wheel, i wanna change to 07%26#039;s model. (if you know what im talkin about) can i do that?|||you will need to get a puller to remove it Yes you can do this|||You can change it.You will need a wheel puller.Make sure you get the air bag for the new wheel. Not sure if the bags are the same.Be VERY CAREFUL when removing the air bag.Never face the back side towards you or any body else.If it were to go off by accident it%26#039;ll hurt bad.|||Disable the airbag first. Read the manual.

I want to change the steering wheel on my renault espace.?

i`ve got long legs %26amp; short arms.i need a steering wheel with an inch or more reach back into the cab, mine is almost flat.are all renault steering wheel splines the same? anyone know of a renault steering wheel with what i need?|||try your local renault dealer, or failing that local auto spares shop i%26#039;m sure you can get a spacer to move the wheel closer|||thank you

|||If it has an air bag dont try taking it off yourself. Most splines of the same make would be the same

Can you change out a non-tilt steering wheel with a tilting one?

and is that expensive? I have a 1996 Nissan pickup and I need more room for my gut- is it expensive to change out the steering wheel?

1 minute ago - 4 days left to answer.|||The entire steering column needs to be replaced Wrecking Yard, Auto Recyclers may have a steering column but a word of warning check carefully for crash damage. Buy two shear off bolts to exchange your lock assembly to the tilt column. Also try to get the plastic parts around the steering wheel. Tilt should also work with manual steering. Or just Exercise More|||You have to buy a whole steering column. If they make tilt ones for that vehicle, then you should be able to switch it. You might get a good deal on one at a junk yard.|||Sorry but I dont think any of the 90%26#039;s hardbody pickups had tilt steering wheels.

I want to change the steering wheel of my 2003 saturn ion?

will it affect the car?

what kind of stiring should i get and how much will it cost me for service?|||Thats not something I would suggest doing. You did not mention what kind of steering wheel you wanted. But if you remove the steering wheel you are removing the airbag. I would not suggest that you do this yourself. The airbag can deploy during removal. This will mess your airbag up and maybe you in the process.

How do i change a steering wheel pump for a 1998 toyota corolla?

toyota wants to charge me around $600 for the service is that what it should cost to fix it or can i get it cheaper at another mechanic?|||i,d do it for a lot less

i paid $500 last year to have a (ford) alternator fitted last year but that included the alternator as well.

it,s an pretty simple job really.

on average they have only two nuts and the wiring and the battery that need undoing.

power steering is similarly easy

2 hoses need disconnecting

the fanbelt comes off

unbolt the p/s pump

then in reverse and fill with fluid.

so with todays market shop around as there will be someone who is also capable and needing that job but does not pay as much for the fancy real estate and can do it cheaper

I need to remove the steering wheel from my 96 monte carlo. How do I keep the airbag from opening?

I need to remove the steering wheel to change out the turning signal switch.|||TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES BEFORE WORKING ON IT LEAVE IT DISCONNECTED WHILE CHANGING EVER THING OVER I%26#039;VE DONE IT WITH BATT CONNECTED AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM|||disconnect the wiring harness from it when you loose it up,,you can also take the battery cable off,,which is a good idea anyway,,but once you pull the bolts from the air bag it comes out enough so that you can disconnect the wires from it,,i hope this help.s.

Can you just install a steering wheel on a car, or does it have to be "compatible "?

Ok so i%26#039;ve got a really old car, with no steering wheel airbag and i want to change the steering wheel, how do i know if it will fit etc?|||You would have to look at the shaft and count the splines, and measure the shaft diameter. Then you can count the splines on the steering wheel and check the hole diameter. Or you can do it the old fashioned way. Beat the sucker on until it won%26#039;t move. If it looks good then it fits. (just kidding)|||There are hundreds of companies that manufacture thousands of styles of steering wheels. Almost every one will have an adapter to easily install whatever you want on your car.|||you just can,t grab a wheel and put it on. it has to be made for your car. not every steering wheel will fit all cars.|||Easy answer - get a new one. See link

Is the airbag in the actual steering wheel?

right, i have a vw golf mk3, the steering wheel is getting a bit tatty so i want to update it, the steering wheel says air bag on it, does this mean that if i change the steering wheel i wont have an airbag any more?|||yep.. just put a wheelcover on it|||The airbag itself is actually inside the steering wheel. So yes if you change the steering wheel you will no longer have an airbag. You may also find that your insurers are interested in the fact you don`t have a drivers airbag when the model you drive has one as standard. Be careful.|||The airbag is in the steering wheel. You will no longer have an airbag if you change it out. your passenger airbag may not work as well. Your SRS or airbag light will also turn on. You can replace it with a steering wheel from the factory. I suggest you keep your old steering wheel, because airbags are expensive|||Fraid so, and they do get tatty over time, but very handy in a crash.|||well im not sure about that because my air bag sits in the passenger seat and it doesnt shut up while driveing i would love to change mine aswell to one with no tongue to talk with|||It%26#039;s in the centre of the wheel, that%26#039;s why there%26#039;s a big, bulky plastic hub to it. I%26#039;d agree, don%26#039;t change it unless you%26#039;re replacing it with a similar one, and even then get a mechanic to do it.|||Yes, it%26#039;s in the steering wheel itself.

If you%26#039;re going to update it, I would recommend replacing it with another one with an airbag, for insurance (and safety) purposes.

I would also suggest you get a qualified technician to do it. Airbags are triggered by explosive release of gases, so the operation could be dangerous.|||its in the steering wheel so you won%26#039;t have one if you replace your steering wheel

Will changing a car stereo affect use of the audio remote control on the steering wheel?

currently there%26#039;s a cassette/radio in the car, but i would like a CD/radio, so going to change it. will this mean that the audio remote control will no longer work though? thanks|||My car has controls for the radio/cassette player on a stalk protruding from the steering wheel (like the lights/indicators/windscreen wipers%26#039; controls etc.). I fitted a different radio/CD player and this rendered the stalk control useless. Don%26#039;t know if that will be the same for every car but this is what happened to me.|||If you change it for the upgraded CD/radio that was originally fitted in your model of car then there will be connections for the steering controls.

If you buy a generic CD/radio then you *may* be able to get a conversion kit, but usually not.|||highly unlikely... the controls are matched to the stereo... change it ans something isnt going to worrk|||on some radios there will b extra connections? sometimes this is for the problems u may be having? u probably need an extra lead or connector? i had the same problem on a Renault.|||u need a cable called a smart lead about 拢40

How do you change a steering wheel with an airbag in without the airbag light staying on? car - impreza 2.0 gl?

You may need the site again.|||It does not matter because it%26#039;s illegal to do. The air bags all have to function if the car has them from the factory for that model year.|||I am not sure about the Impreza but I have heard that disconnecting the battery can prevent the airbag light coming on. You may need to leave it disconnected for a while beforehand.|||I don%26#039;t think you can based on the ECU setup within that vehicle.

Just my 2 cents but you%26#039;ll live longer if you leave the airbag where it belongs and your insurance company can cancel any claims made on your policy if a safety item like the airbag is removed.

Check it out.|||Well you would have to put a resistor in the connector what was of the right value and this would keep the light from coming on...I don%26#039;t know exactly what the value is for that car...usually it%26#039;s 2-4ohms...I think...

I want to change my steering wheel, but i have a very old car. How do i know a new one will fit?

My car is a 1970 Mazda 1800, which has its original steering wheel. I just want to put a new wood style one in that has a smaller diameter. If i buy one off the net, or a wreckers how do i know if it will fit?|||most of these you have to buy a hub adapter to get them to fit. unsure if they make them for that one , Search here for one http://www.grantproducts.com/|||best and safest is to go back original.|||You will need an adapter that will work with your car. Steering wheels are application specific. Your local auto parts store can help you. GL

Can I upgrade/change the steering wheel of my 2005 Mustang Premium to the GT steering wheel?

I really like the Silver/Crome look of it. Would match more with billet interior upgrades. I%26#039;d like to know if all the specifications would be the same for installation if I were to order the GT steering wheel.|||I don%26#039;t think you%26#039;re looking for a GT steering wheel, so much as the wheel that came with the %26quot;interior upgrade package.%26quot; Any Ford dealer can order/install this wheel for you.|||It would work, but its not worth it.|||yes you can. you can order stock ford parts via your local dealer or you can get a really nice look with aftermarket products such as a momo (and others available).

Changing car stereo, but still want to use steering wheel remote?

I have a 2003 Scenic (99-2003 model) and want a new CD player, preferably with an input jack. Are there any models that will still allow me to use the remote control that is in the steering column? Car question. How come when I get an oil change or anything, they change the steering wheel position & lights?

I turn the lights on maybe 3/4s the way so that the lights for the radio, money/cigarette tray etc are brighter. They always turn it back down.

Also how come they change the steering wheel? Is that just whoever%26#039;s height and comfortablitiy or is there a reason for it (steering wheel fluid or something will leak)

thanks|||They probably just change the wheel position so they can fit into the car or safely move it. Has nothing to do with any maintenance test. As far as turning down the lights goes, I have no idea - maybe they just bump the switch/dial by accident?

You might want to write down the exact mileage of your car when you drop it off next time - there%26#039;s a (probably slim) chance someone is driving your car around without your permission but things are most likely just getting changed around so that the tech can fit in the car long enough to pull it into the service bay.|||maybe when they sit it in to drive it in the shop, they adjust the stuff to their settings..

but if your just doing an oil change, you just drive in, shouldnt need them to|||i would change mechanics. they arent supposed to mess with your personal settings, unless it was hard for them to get in the seat

Does anyone know how much costs to change the steering wheel and dashboard of a Mitsubishi Pajero 2000?

I have a sport version (3 doors, automatic trans. with sequential gear shift) of a 2000 Mitsubishi Pajero GDI built in Japan, so, my steering wheel is on the rigth side. Now, I want to take it to a country where the cars have the steering wheel on the left (like American cars). How much will it approximately cost me to change my dashboard and steering wheel, plus pedals, handbrake, etc?|||First question is, Why?? There are no laws in the countries that have left hand drives that require you to change it over.

Now for your answer. Unless you find a donor car for parts, it will cost more than the car is worth.

For instance, All the pedals must be moved. That is all the break lines must be rerouted and master cylinder moved. If you have AC, the evaporator must be moved. You wiper blades and motor will have to be moved. If you have air bags, that will cost a bunch.

In some cases, if the car you have is not sold in the country you are going to, it is very possible that the dash board is not even available.

How to change the steering wheel to a custom in a 91 DX civic?

How to change a steering wheel?

How to avoid air bag deploy in steering wheel after removing cover plate on nissan skyline 1995-1998 to change steering wheel with boss kit|||the airbag will not deploy.

What changes the steering wheel on a Porsche?

I mean-the 911%26#039;s, caymans and boxsters have a triangular steering wheel and a round steering wheel. I%26#039;m talking about the 2005 models (updated interior). Does it change with like a sport package or different transmission? Or what?|||I believe you%26#039;re talking about the hub of the wheel; all handling portions of all the steering wheels I%26#039;ve seen are round. My 2005 Porsche Turbo S (a 996 body car) has a %26quot;triangular%26quot; hub to the wheel. All of the 2005 911s I%26#039;ve seen with a round (and chrome edged) center to the hub are Carrera and Carrera S models (997 body cars). Porsche built both the 996 cars (Turbo, Turbo S, and Carrera 4S models) and the 997 cars (Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, etc.) in 2005.

Beginning in 2006 only the 997 body cars were built, and the 996 body form was retired.

Where can I change my steering wheel from left to right side?

I have a french steering wheel car and have to change from left to the right side since I am going to be driving in Dublin for the next few years.

How much does it cost? or is it better to buy another car, i just love my car.|||Conversion would be expensive.

BUT

As far as I know you can register and insure your French car in Ireland, you can register any car in any EU country (the only exception is Slovakia that doesn%26#039;t allow registration of RHD Right Hand Drive cars) no matter what side the steering wheel is on. You surely can in the UK.

There%26#039;s just couple of thing you have to do -

- headlamps must be dipping to the left - one way is to put on special stickers, some lamps can be adjusted with a switch, the worst that can happen is to change the lens covers

- you must pass emmission tests

- you must present a Declaration of Conformity (you should be able to get one from the manufacturer (visit your car dealer) if you don%26#039;t have one already, I got mine with my car when I bought it.)

- fog and reversing rear lights must be swapped or you must have extra lights fitted

- you DON%26#039;T have to change your speedo from km to miles - Ireland went metric a few years ago.

You should be able to use your car for a while in Ireland with French plate.

As for the driving on the other side of the road. I drove LHD cars in the UK and RHD cars in Europe. I lived in the UK for four years and had UK car, but I drove more kilometers in Europe than in UK.

It doesn%26#039;t really matter where the steering wheel is - in towns and on motorways. The only issue is on twisting rural roads - to overtake you must have someone on board to tell you about oncoming traffic.

It takes a while but you%26#039;ll get used to it quickly.

Feel free to ask me further questions.|||Buy another car.

You%26#039;d need a new dashboard and all sorts. Major work. Forget it.|||Think it would be better to buy another car|||You need to buy a new car. Its very difficult to change sides and it would cost more than buying a new car in some circumstances!|||cost hugh amount it may be cheaper to leave your car where it is and rent one you have to find a mechanical shop to do it it may cost more than your car did|||Yes you can and you will be glad to know does not cost a lot and is surprisingly easy to do. First you will need a selection of spanners and a huge ball of bluetac, oh and one of those stick on steering wheels and fake dashboard like Maggie uses at the start of the Simpson%26#039;s.

Good, got all those? Well here we go, firstly drive into something solid, really fast, this should make the airbag go off and eliminates the chances of it going off whilst we are working on the steering wheel and causing an accident!!|||Depends on what make and type of car! Never the less very expensive and time consuming. Good luck.|||The cost will be prohibitive! The structural alterations needed are extensive and can be very involved and time-consuming. With some makes or models it is just not possible.

Buy a new car or just get used to using the left-hand steering car on the left-hand side of the road in Ireland. You will be amazed at how quickly you will get used to it!|||Halfords or Qwikfit will do it while you wait. You%26#039;ll have to phone first though.|||A new car.|||Don%26#039;t bother !!

How can I change the Car steering wheel from left to right for different countries?

I like to export car to the Far East. How can I change the steering wheel to the right? How much does the export fee cost?|||Not very many countries in the Far East drive on the left. Aside from most former British colonies, there%26#039;s Japan, Indonesia, Macau, Mozambique, Thailand and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also, you don%26#039;t have to have the steering wheel on the right in order to drive on the left... but many countries have banned cars with steering wheels on the wrong side.|||It%26#039;s not worth the trouble. I live in Greece (left-hand drive) %26amp; drive a British car. (right-hand drive) I don%26#039;t have a problem.

You wouldn%26#039;t be able to reach the peddles either! ;o)|||It will be very expensive to change the steering wheel from side to side, better just to leave it alone.

The export fees will depend on the value of the vehicle and the method of transporting it.|||Exporting cars involve more than changing the steering wheel. Each country has its own regulation and costly to meet the specifications. Also you need to consider duties. Pay somebody to get some real advice.|||It is not necessary and moreover, it is cost prohibitive.|||Far-East countries and people care less about which side of the car that they are driving. As a matter of fact, the steering on the wrong side of the car makes it genuinely import thus the value even may be increased.|||I think it might be cheaper and easier just to buy a new car when you get there. I%26#039;ve never heard of anyone changing the driving side around ... it would probably take some serious engineering.|||Not just the wheel, but the whole dashboard with all the wiring, etc. and all the mechanicals under the hood. Cheaper to sell and buy a car in the country you%26#039;re considering

How do you change a steering wheel on dodge caravan?

I bought a 1997 Dodge Caravan and the airbag on the drivers side has been exploded, my question is, how do I change the steering wheel so I can put a new one on?|||you can just replace the airbag you do not have to replace the whole steering wheel. and i suggest that you have a professional do this as it can be dangerous working with air bags|||You don%26#039;t need to remove the steering wheel to replace the airbag. Dis-connect the battery, there are I believe four (4) torx tip screws holding the airbag to the steering wheel. Remove and replace. Ther wil be a connector underneath the bag, easily removed. Remember to completely remove both the positive and negative battery cables and take your time.|||there%26#039;s some screws on the back of the steering wheel about mid-back you take those off and it alows you to take some part of the stearing wheel off ldon%26#039;t know what exactly] then you remove the bag and what not and there should be a bolt in the middle set back some. use an air gun to take it off [to make it easier] and if it doen%26#039;t just slide off [most likly won%26#039;t ] you%26#039;ll have to get a stearing wheel puller or hit 2 sides of it with a rubber malet [not siting in seat] and eventually it will come off. but your better off having in a mechanic do it|||A Dodge Caravan *Sweet*

Would the calibration of the driver airbags change if I changed the steering wheel core of my car to a non OEM

I am changing my steering wheel core from leather to wood and feel worried about the driver side airbags|||There%26#039;s a strong possiblity that it would throw a code to the computer that there is a problem with the airbag system (being, no front airbag) and there%26#039;s a 99% chance that it will deactivate the entire airbag system.

Most of it depends on the vehicle and manufacturer, as well as if you replace the steering wheel with one that has an airbag.

Changing steering wheel on mercedes c220if that is possible to be done from right to left???

Good Luck...it%26#039;s not too bad of a job %26amp; if your state allows it, used parts or parts from ebay should be ok|||your better off letting a shop do this one because of the air bags ,they will be better equipped to handle this one, good luck,

How do you straighten a steering wheel after changing a steering gearbox. it is 1/4 turn off / cannot align?

You see where it lines up to drive straight, note that position.

Remove it at that position and reinstall in the aligned position.

Can I change a steering wheel with airbag to a racing steering wheel without airbag?

Looking to upgrade my car with the styling with some subtle changes and currently have a FordEscort 1997 model with airbag in steering wheel. Is there any issues with changing the current steering wheel to a racing steering wheel that does not have an airbag. And is there any problems with the laws and requirements for airbags, though there can%26#039;t be with classic cars and older cars still on the road.|||Your biggest problem will be your insurance company who probably will void your cover if you remove the airbag. Check with them first, or you may end-up with no cover.|||Yes, you can change it out. There is no law requiring that there is supposed to be an airbag in your car. Good luck.|||LEGALLY, i would say maybe not. Not totally sure. Just like seat belts, they are a safety feature.

I don%26#039;t think anyone would notice though, at least in MY state there are no safety inspections. Only emissions checks.|||Yes, it%26#039;s perfectly ok (In the UK at least).

Only problem with sports steering wheels is that they obscure your dash a bit (indicator lights etc), but that%26#039;s just an irritation.|||Check with your local DMV to see if it is legal. Yes it can be done but I am not sure why you would want to. To disable a safety item is not a good idea. If the car is going to be turned in to a racer and not driven on the street you can do it with out having to worry if it is legal. If you plan on driving it on the street and keeping it registered you will have to check with the DMV. The reason why is legal for Classic cars to run with out them is the simple fact they where not installed on classic cars. Often changing or disabling safety features on a car make it so you can not register the car until it is restored to operational status. but again you will need to check with your DMV|||There is one HUGE safety issue with changing the steering wheel. The factory procedure for removal of the airbag must be followed EXACTLY or you risk the airbag deploying while being removed. This is a bad thing if you happen to have your head in the way. You will have to disable the airbag light in the dashboard also.|||You can do what ever you want with your car. when it comes to altering the standard safety items that came with the cat, you might read the fine print in your insurance policy. Also you will have to put the air bag back on when you go for a safety check or try to sell the car|||Do your family a favour and KEEP the air bag.

And if you decide to change the wheel for one without an airbag, beware. I bet you are one of those guys who don%26#039;t tell the insurance company about all those little mods. If you have a frontal impact and end up disabled, eating through a straw for the rest of your life, if you didn%26#039;t inform the insurance company about this change, they won%26#039;t pay out.

I%26#039;m sure you must be able to get fancy new steering wheels with modern airbags fitted also.... ?|||Disabling

A comprehensive strategy has been developed to preserve the benefits of air bags while minimizing the risks. Starting in 1998, the federal government allowed certain car owners to purchase an on-off switch for their air bags. Auto dealers and service outlets install the switches. Only people who fit into the following categories are eligible:

* Those who cannot avoid placing rear-facing infant seats in the front seat

* Those who cannot adjust their driving position to keep back at least 10 inches from the steering wheel

* Those who cannot avoid situations, such as car pools, that require a child age 12 or under to ride in the front seat

* Those who have a medical condition that places them at some specific risk

Removing

You should not remove an airbag. It%26#039;s against the law.

If you remove, change or tamper with an airbag, you can be subject to the Wisconsin Defective Air Bag Law (2001 Wisconsin Act 28). Any person who unlawfully removes or tampers with an airbag can be subject to a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for not more than one year in a county jail or both.

you may want to check your states rules as they are probably close to this.

ford has similar rules that make the modifier of the vehicle get it certified with the federal goverment|||Yes you can change it if you want. The airbag light will flash as it will log a fault. Also, insurance companies may not pay out in an accident in which you are injured if that airbag is found to have been removed.|||The policeman can%26#039;t tell you that you musn%26#039;t remove the airbag from your motor, but if you%26#039;re not confident in handling such a task, leave it to the experts.|||I would not call that an upgrade.|||Oh grow up! Are you going racing in your 97 Escort? Thought not so why do you need a racing steering wheel? Why would you want your car to only LOOK like it can go fast when under all the plastic and stickers its a standard Escort? If you are going to spend your money kevving your car up why not uprate the engine handling and brakes but leave the bodywork standard? A normal looking car that goes like stink, corners like its on rails and stops on a sixpence is far more impressive than a crappy hatchback that looks like its been covered in glue and had bits of fibreglass bodywork chucked at it|||Yes, it%26#039;s perfectly legal and straight-forward enough. Personally, I wouldn%26#039;t drive without an airbag, vanity has a price.|||changing the steering wheel and not putting the air bag back in, if a car comes from the factory with air bags in the steering wheel and someone removes it,they can get a ticket from the police if you ever get checked, plus insurance can be canceled on car, its a law, not to remove safety equipment that%26#039;s installed from the factory

How to change steering wheel buttons lights?

I need to know how to change the lights on my steering wheel on a 06 gmc sierra? it does not say anything in my owners manuel and I don%26#039;t want ot break any of the buttons. THANKS!|||if there are lights on your steering wheel for optional controls. you need to take it to a repair shop. if you don%26#039;t know what you are doing you NEVER mess with a steering wheel with a Air Bag. NEVER!!! they can kill you !!!!|||what steering wheel light. the gears?|||These lights are usually fiber optic cables that are connected to a separate light source. Take the vehicle to a dealer or an auto repair shop.

Changing a Steering Wheel (Vauxhall Corsa B)?

I was just wondering, is it possible to change a steering wheel on my corsa B? its a W reg (2000), and it currently doesnt have an airbag, i would ideally like to put one in that does have an airbag. Preferably from a newer corsa.

Is is difficult?

I%26#039;d appreciate any answers as i am not very good with cars!

Thanks :)|||undo the nut|||i think that it would be very simple to remove the wheel, just make sure that you have the wheels dead straight first or when it goes back it will be out of alignment. You cannot fit one with an airbag unless you already have the electrical connections fitted to the car. There are risks also when connecting the wiring to these things as they can go of!

My advice would be to leave as is!!|||I would say don%26#039;t do it, it is not only a matter of removing the steering wheel, ( of which you will need a steering wheel puller) you will need to install wiring in to the car up in to the steering column then you have got to put the wiring in for the sensers in the bumpers of your car this will cost too much money and be to dangerous as well to even think about .|||Forget it save up to buy yourself a newer car, a Corsa of that age won%26#039;t have the wiring and it definitely won%26#039;t have the sensors fitted at the front of the car which tells the airbag exactly when to deploy, also the steering wheel contains a small explosive charge which should only be handled by an expert.

Can steering wheel audio controls be installed onto a car's wheel without changing the stereo system?

I have a nissan versa and I want the controls in my steering wheel. I know that you can buy controls when you change the stereo system but I don%26#039;t want to do that.|||If it is an option on those vehicles, yes you can. But that will require a new steering wheel and possibly a new air bag module.

This can be expensive and like I said, is ONLY possible if it is a factory option.

How do I go about changing the current steering wheel on my car?

I recently purchased a used 02 Honda Civic Coupe that has a customized steering wheel instead of the standard steering wheel.

How do I find a stock steering wheel for my Honda and who should I see for the operation of switching the steering wheels. Furthermore, what is the price range of such an operation?

Thank you very much for your answers.|||I would get a price from Honda first. The car%26#039;s not that old, they might be able to get it for you. Or you can try your local auto recycler. Look in the Yellow Pages for several in your area and call around. It%26#039;s a very common car.

Any general mechanic can do the job, you could too if you wanted. The Chilton or Haynes manual will tell you how. Look at the aftermarket wheel, see if you can find a manufacturer- go to their website. There should be directions for installation that are downloadable there, just reverse them for removal.

Pricing, well I was looking on ebay for you- the steering wheel isn%26#039;t that expensive, but you must also buy the air bag. The wheel was $50 plus 12 shipping, the airbag was $75 plus 25 shipping. Mechanic may get up to $90 per hour. He/She may hit you for 2 hours, but I think it%26#039;s a 1 hr job. So figure between $300- $400. Good Luck!|||Any garage can do it.

The prime safety factor that I know of is the air bag system. Other wise I would say you could do it alone.

The best place to find the part is in a local salvage yard.

http://www.car-part.com/|||No problems changing the wheel back and it%26#039;s easy to do it yourself. Go to any parts store and get a steering wheel puller and to the salvage yard for a used wheel. Watch them pull the wheel if possible to see where everything goes and put it together the same. One problem is you need to know if your car had a factory air bag. If so it will be a dealer install item and very expensive. Puller $15, Steering Wheel $20, DIY=PRICELESS.

Changing the side of the steering wheel?

well i have my eyes on a US dodge charger or chevrolet camaro which is pretty much ruined but has an engine that still works... however i live in the UK so its steering wheel needs to be changed over to the right hand side... is this possible? I have no real engineering skill so any links towards a renovating a car and/ or changing the steering wheel over would be much appreciated!

thanks in advance|||There are a lot of shops in the US that do Right Hand Drive Conversions. If you look online, you might find a shop in your country. An older car will be easier to convert because of how much simpler they were back then.

http://www.right-hand-drive.co.uk/

http://www.uswd.com/american.htm|||Does it legally have to be right hand drive in the UK? Because if not I would suggest leaving it left hand drive. That is way too much work for someone who is not an expert. If you are going to do it pay the money for someone to do it for you.|||No - stick to it being left hand drive.

Answer to Bill%26gt; No, no need at all to be right hand drive. Loads of European cars and trucks on our roads with LH drive.

Changing steering wheel with airbag ?

I have a cadillac brougham and need to change the steering wheel, how do I pull this thing off whithout the airbag going off thanks|||remove SRS fuse|||what year?|||pull fuse, disconnect air bag wire under dash, disconnect negative side of battery cable.|||WATCH OUT!!!!!! it%26#039;s like a garnade!!!! DISCONNECT BATTERY FIRST DISSAPATE ELECTRICAL CHARGE OUT OF YOUR BODY wear latex gloves unless you are allergic to LATEX!!! disconnect yellow wire take out airbag LAY FACE DOWN IN AREA THAT YOUR NOT WORKING IN ! reverse order to install !!!!!

Thinking about changing my steering wheel in my car?

It%26#039;s a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird. I%26#039;d like to have a better or more sportier type of steering wheel like chrome looking. If you have any suggestions please post some links on here so I can look and see if I find what I like. Thanks.|||http://www.grantproducts.com/|||i would wait and save for a new car to get one, or do the one you got already done up. but as its 1990 the engine could go any minute.

can you answer mine please/

What are the laws for changing your steering wheel in queensland?

i want to change my steering wheel to a sports wheel on my 98 magna sports and i just wanted to know the legal requirements.

from what ive heard it has to be at least 350mm in diameter and you can%26#039;t change it if it has an airbag on the original wheel (luckily mine doesnt lol) if thats right can someone confirm it, if not can you tell me the actual laws? cheers|||As far as I can see from here in the USA almost nothing is legal there especially if it involves any kind of self defense device. Maybe if you can prove you don%26#039;t intend to use it as a weapon??? LOL Mate

Changing the steering wheel from right to left?

on a chevy impala68 model, how much would it cost in ozzy dollars to change sterring wheel from righ to left?|||It would be a custom job, get several quotes from firms that undertake such work.

I think a better alternative would be to leave it alone. Cars are not required to be right hand drive in Oz anymore, driving LHD is not a problem after a little practice, I have been driving fullsize American cars in the UK for years without any problems, over here doing such a conversion would drastically reduce the value of the car.

Bear in mind most American cars were designed only to be LHD, with asymetrical dashboards and engine bay layouts.

When I was in Oz earlier this year I remember reading with horror about someone who had chopped up a %26#039;63 imperial to convert it to RHD and destroyed a fine original car in the process.|||if you ship it to houston Texas ...I will do it for

8 thousand dollars U.S.

Would changing my steering wheel change my handling?

I have a stock steering wheel on my bmw and if i changed it to a new steering wheel would my car feel stiffer? Or does the steering wheel have nothing to do with that and its all the suspension?|||Nah, %26#039;fraid not. It would be nice if it did though.|||the steering wheel has nothing to do with the way the car feels, drives.|||Change your outer tie rods with some high end ones and that should help stiffen up your steering wheel. But will not help with handling. For that you would have to get new shocks and springs.|||you might install a damper shock on the front axel, this will also stiffen up the turning or wondering. a smaller steering wheel just turns the front from left to right faster.|||It wont make an effect on the suspension but it will make a difference on the amount of effort it will take to steer it. Make sure the replacement steering wheel is the same diameter as the one you are replacing. Otherwise you may have to turn the wheel more to make the equivalent amount of turns on a stock steering wheel.|||It will change the grip

Now this:.And also if you go smaller it will be more quicker respond you will feel more like a racing car . Now if you go standard but better feel it will be like factory but like a said the grip if you go bigger than factory you will feel that you are driving a bus but a lot quicker on take off . Your arms will rest more because they are wider apart.

It is all about looks and what is right to have. Engineers go to a lot to come out whit the best for the car and some of us make some changes without thinking on the result in case of and emergency. They have a book on the best options that you can go that the manufacture said is ok .to have . @ the end you can get an adapter to fit any wheel in a car . You always learn how to compensate.I hope this will help you .i did some staff like that on some of my toys and it was ok for me no problem.|||smaller or biggger steering whell will change the way you steer but not how the car drives
