Problem working the steering wheel in my car when i want to turn!!?

I have a 98 dodge stratus. Its been running really well as of late, but last week, the wheel started putting up resistance when I try to turn. Its only when I'm pulling into or out of parking spots, or try to turn with my foot on the break...I just got my oil changed a little while ago and they said all my fluids were good...is this going to be pricey to fix?

Problem working the steering wheel in my car when i want to turn!!?
Sounds as if you are having one of two problems. First check the belt. If the problem is at low RPMs it could be slipping. Or you could have a rack and pinion that is going bad on you.
sounds like the steering pump is low or the belt is slipping. those places will tell you anything. some of those places don,t know a power steering from a radio.

What provokes a clicking sound inside the steering wheel?

I own a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and everything works fine but there is this little sound that its heard when I turn the steering wheel lets say to change to another lane or to make a turn. The sound is similar to the sound that goes on when you use the directional and goes off when you are done making the turn, the sound that happens when the directional go back to its original place. The cv joints are perfect, and no other sound its heard when the steering wheel makes that sound. Any idea what could be? I guess is something inside the steering wheel.
What provokes a clicking sound inside the steering wheel?
It is probably inside the steering column. There are plastic and nylon pieces that can wear out and break.
What provokes a clicking sound inside the steering wheel?
its normal..probably just a pieced of plastic sticking out and hitting something...nothing to really worry about

I'm experiencing very loud vibrating/rumbling noises on my Renault Laguna when driving and steering what is it

It is a well used car (200k miles). The problem does not appear to be one with the engine. There is a loud rumbling noise that is occuring which seems to change in volume when the steering wheel is moved. The noise is pretty bad and sounds as if you are driving over rumble strips. I have checked the power steering liquid and that is full and I am quite worried about driving it. I would just like some advice as to what the problem could be. Any help would be much appreciated.

many thanks.
I'm experiencing very loud vibrating/rumbling noises on my Renault Laguna when driving and steering what is it
I think you have a blown, or shifted belt in the tire. If you have steel belted, it is difinite. If you have nylon, rayon bias belted, the defect in the tire is in the side wall. If the rumble was in the swaying of the tire, then it would be on the bottom, and that condition, is called tracking. Do ypou feel any irregular feeling in the steering wheel, ex. right to left movement, then the problem is in the front wheels. If you feel a troubbing, in the seat of the car, then your bad tire is in the rear tires. replace as necessary.

It sounds to me like a wheel bearing. I believe they are double row angular bearings, and one race can fail. This is often dure to the seal failing and letting water in.

The change in noise when cornering points to a bearing, as this will change the thrust load.

It might not be obvious from spinning the wheel, or rocking the wheel, as on of the races could be okay.

Steering wheel controls?

I am thinking of changing the stereo in my citroen xzara 1998, as it has just the standard cassete player at the moment, but my hubby tells me that the steering wheel controls wont work any more is this right? I want to put a cd player in and i have done this in several cars so i have basic knoledge but i have never had steering wheel controls before, any ideas?
Steering wheel controls?
if you have a good make stereo you can buy an iso plug from halfords that has a remote lead in it that would work your steering controls ask them for the right one it is a couple of quid more than the standard iso plug but no more than 20 quid i would advise taking in the stereo with you to check it is compatible with the controls or price a new one whilst you are in there
Steering wheel controls?
Depends on if the new stereo has inputs for the steering wheel controls or not. Probably hard to match if at all possible.
you can get new steering wheel controls aswell.
Unless it is a Factory stereo, the built in controls will not work anymore. You might check junkyards and see if there is a vehicle of the same year/make/model as yours that you could get a CD player from. Or consider a multipack CD changer that mounts remotely.

Aftermarket stereos don't have the remote control/steering wheel controlsbuilt into them. Even if they did, the wiring would be a nightmare.
It will have to be the same make of Stereo that is currently in the car
yes you can do this-its called a steering wheel control interface-its avalible from pacific accessory corporation-this wires in to your original steering controls and it has a remote eye you can mount it to face your new cd/or tape player-its very hard to program though there instructions arent very good but it does work-its about $60-hope this helps ya out

****also-you do have to buy an aftermarket radio that comes with a remote or this wont work
UR HUBBY IS RITE
if you get a decent stereo you should be able to get an adapter for steering wheel controls, but be prepared for the cost as i had to pay just short of 拢80 for an alpine one

  • After market steering wheel (1984 C10 p/u)?

I am planning on buying a after market steering wheel for an 1984 Chevy C10 p/u. And I'm wondering if the horn will be compatible with the new steering wheel. I've been browsing the web and mostly all steering wheels I've seen are for off road use only, they have no horns. Does anyone have any suggestion on a compatible steering wheel that has a horn. I'm only changing it because I hate the huge factory steering wheel. Thanks a bunch.
    After market steering wheel (1984 C10 p/u)?
Most of the aftermarket wheels from like Grant, and Billet Specialties have working horn buttons

You'll need to buy the wheel you like then the chevy Installation Kit for the wheel.

Here's you about 400 steering wheels that will work

    Steering wheel wobble when braking?

Changed my front disks and pads to new ones. now when I brake at 50mph+ the steering wheel wobbles/vibrates. What should I check for?
    Steering wheel wobble when braking?
Our car did that two separate times. Once it was the tie-rods, which cost a couple of hundred bucks to repair. The other time it was the sway bar, which cost less than a hundred, but was an important repair because the broken ends were scraping the gas tank and could have caused a major bad explosion sort of thing.
    Steering wheel wobble when braking?
Your car is out of line
    thats not good
check for uneven wear on the new pads and also it could be a loose lugnut. your brake caliper might be loose on the rotor or somwthing else on the braking system
mine did the exact same thing, they told me it could be the roters need to be turned or that the brakes might need fixing all together. either way i know if you leave it you'll need a new set of brakes.
Well first of whoever did the work take it back to them. They should fix this for you for no charge. If not then you could get the police involved. But if you did it yourself just verify that you didn't handle the disks and pats too much or damaged them by any chance. The pads might not fit and someone just say they were close enough and threw them on. Maybe over a couple days they will wear down some and it will go away completely. Its really hard to tell without looking at it. It could be a bunch of things. Take it back to the garage where you had it fixed. They are liable.
your front rotors need to be replaced or resurfaced.
Take the car back to who ever replaced the breaks and tell them what is happening , Maybe they will put it up on the rack and could spot the problem , Remember they only did the breaks and did not look for anything else , Could be shocks ,Tie roads ends ect. good luck

2000 Chevy impala...notice a clunking/rattling feeling in the steering wheel sometimes when turning. Cause?

The feeling does not have a sound associated with it, and only happens on occasion. I just replaced the brake pads and rotors as they needed changing, was hoping it was brake related but I still notice the rattle. The car does not pull, and the play in the steering wheel seems normal. Could this be a loose tie rod or something?
2000 Chevy impala...notice a clunking/rattling feeling in the steering wheel sometimes when turning. Cause?
Most of the time on front drive cars the stabalizer bushings are the culprit.
2000 Chevy impala...notice a clunking/rattling feeling in the steering wheel sometimes when turning. Cause?
sounds like you may have a bearing problem.... i know a lot of ppl who experience this after a rotor change.... happen to get the smallest pc of dirt in the bearing, and voila.... baearing sushi.... while your car is sitting on a level surface (close anyways) straighten your wheels, and then jump out and grab the tire. pull it towards and away from you (shake it back and forth) and see if you get a noise close to the one you hear while driving... if so... you need top change your wheel bearings..... make sure you check both sides
jack it up check for worn or missing rubber bushings
Hi, you had stated that it clunks when you turn. First question is, how many miles you may have? If you have more than 60-75k then you might be in need of a CV axle. They are kind of cheap and depending on mechanical know how, maybe easy to replace. If not, then you might want to shop around for a good deal on a replacement. But, of course that'd have to be the problem first. Good luck.
The feeling that you are experiencing is caused by the intermediate steering shaft. Gm had lots for these for the same condition, first replacing the shafts (didn't work, the new shafts would do the same thing after a while.)

Now the repair is to lubricate them. Gm has a special grease and install kit available. Fairly easy to do, uncouple

the steering column from the shaft and install grease into intermediate shaft slip joint and put in plug. Move intermediate shaft forward and back several times and the remove plug and reassemble. This should remedy your problem, at least for a while. Sometimes the condition may reoccur in months or years. I've done several dozen or more of these at the Gm dealer I work at. The situation got so bad, that gm was selling so may int. shafts that they stopped selling them. The only way to get one was to have authorization from Gm (not the dealer) to send you one. Hope this helps.

    Steering wheel audio control?

Hi there, I have a Renault Clio 1.4 16v 1999. On the steering wheel it has an audio remote control which allows me to change the volume, radio station and source. I only have a radio/cassette unit with audio dashboard display.

Can I buy a CD unit and still be able to connect the remote up? What would happen to the audio dashboard display would it still tell me the time or would it not work at all.
    Steering wheel audio control?
Unless the new system can come as an optional extra from Renault, then no. The heads up display would fail too. I had the same problem and just fitted good speakers. What a difference.

How can I get my steering wheel straight on my truck?

    It's a 1995 Silverado Z71(4x4) 1500 with a 5.7 and power steering withOUT the hydro pump assist.

Okay, when I got the truck the steering wheel was out of line by about a half a turn to the right. I figured it had been in a wreck and the air bag had been deployed so the steering wheel had been put on wrong. Well, my power steering gear box had been leaking and I just got the money so I got the rebuild kit for it and when I got it out I noticed that the housing on the steering box had been absolutely mutilated.

What I think is that whoever had the truck before I did changed the pitman arm but they did it without pulling the steering box and beat the pitman arm off with a screwdriver and a hammer. *shakes head* I was going to replace the pitman arm anyway and since I have to 'change' the steering box assembly I have no way of knowing how the pitman arm is supposed to go back on there to keep the steering wheel straight. Anyone have any experience with this?
How can I get my steering wheel straight on my truck?
Finnish all your lower repairs, when every thing is right and tight drive your truck perfectly straight into your work area, then pull the steering wheel from the column. One big nut holds it on, you will need a puller (there cheap) line up the splines were you want it and tighten it back up...
How can I get my steering wheel straight on my truck?
the Pitman arm only goes on at the most 4 ways

you adjust the tie rods to center the wheel

    you can do it yourself:

    on a level floor:

first center the wheel, then center the tires straight ahead

then adjust the tie rods (same on both sides) until the str. wh. is straight

tighten everything you loosened, readjust if necessary, it's hard to get it perfect the first time

    good luck!
Your best bet is to have a good front end shop do an alignment and tell them what you suspect, then let them straighten it all out.
The pitman arm I changed had a keyed spline, so it would only go on one of two ways, and one was definitely wrong.

  • How do you remove steering wheel in 93 chevy pick-up in order to change ignition

remove the horn pad, some pull off some have 2 screws on the back of the wheel. then use a flat head screwdriver to remove the saftey lock ring. then remove the nut that holds the wheel on. u will need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off.(hint. make sure the steering wheel is straight when you pull it off so you can put it back on the same way) once you have the wheel off you will need a lock plate compression tool. compress the lock plate and use 2 small flat head screwdrivers to remove the snap ring. once thats out of the way remove the 3 phillips head screws that hold down the turn signal switch.(if it has tilt wheel unscrew the tilt lever too.) pivot the turn sig. switch out of the way and you will see a silver torx head screw under the ignition. remove the screw and pull the ignition cyl. out. slide the new one in and put everything back in. you should plan on at least 2hrs. if its your first one. i have probably done 50 give or take and i can do it in 20min. good luck
How do you remove steering wheel in 93 chevy pick-up in order to change ignition
yoou possibly would need a steering wheel puller(harmonic balancer). Because in many cases they are on a tapered splined shaft(and no amount of pulling or hammering is going to take it off)
How do you remove steering wheel in 93 chevy pick-up in order to change ignition
first remove the horn cover usually screws are on back, then remove center bolt then unscrew turn signal assembly and carefully remove then go to your parts store and buy a steering puller it threads into your steering wheel
The key tumblers are on the column%26gt; If that's what you want out key in turn to acc with a pin insert in hole next to the key out it comes%26gt; If you want the switch it on top of the column under the dash not near the key???
are you changing the switch or the main ignition switch,to change the key and tumblers you have to remove the wheel ,you do that by removing all the external components then using a steering wheel puller remove the wheel, then remove the screw that holds the tumblers in and remove that part of it,the main ignition swich though is located down on the steering column and is a lot easier to change out than the key and tumblers are, good luck.
you need a steering wheel puller.

    Steering wheel audio control buttons?

hi everyone, i just bought a chevrolet impala LS 2001. and it got some buttons on the steering wheel for audio control and cruise control .. after i bought it (used of course) i noticed that the audio control aren't working.. then i when i pressed hard on it.. it worked .. but not all the time.. i thought it would be just some dust i tried to clean it with some pressurised air.. it worked but with confusion.. when i want to raise the volume it changes the channel. and vice versa.. so anyway after some time the whole audio control buttons on the steering wheel stopped working.... however the cruise control still working fine without any problems.. what might be the problem??? and where should i fix it!!?? and how much should i expect to spend on fixing that!?? any advice will be great!

    thanks
    Steering wheel audio control buttons?
Try taking off the steering wheel to see if its loose or crossed wiring at the buttons. If not, then you need to take it to a mechanic because it will be a wiring problem deep in your car.

Wiring problems are the worse to fix... good luck
    Steering wheel audio control buttons?
The buttons on your steering wheel work like your remote control for your TV. No mass of wires running down from the switches. Probably bad switch,Need pro to check it out.
Do not try to take the steering wheel off! The airbag has the potential to blow up with items attached. Specifically all those buttons your concerned about. The exploding airbag can do serious damage....to you!

This is one to take to the professionals.
DON'T REMOVE THE STEERING AT ALL..THE BUTTONS THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ARE JUST LIKE A REMOTE CONTROL AND AS I HAVE SEEN MAY TIMES THESE BUTTONS ARE MOST LIKELY DAMAGES DUE TO THE PREVIOUS OWNER.

BY THIS I MEAN THAT THEY PROBABLY USED THEM VERY HARD AND WITH A LOT OF FORCE.

I have a bad vibration in my steering wheel at highway speeds?

I have a bad vibration in my steering wheel at highway speeds?
Is it really a vibration or is it the increased road feel caused by a low profile tire on an increased wheel size.

The original size on your car should have been 185/65-14. Now you are probably using a 205/40-17. Your old tire had 4.75 inches of rubber between the wheel and the road your new combination gives you 3.25 inches of rubber from the wheel to the road.

The decrease in rubber will make you be able to feel every bump and crack in the road more, it may be felt in the steering wheel. Especially if struts, ball joints or tie rods have any wear in them which would come with age or mileage. An alignment shop will be able to tell you if you have any of these problems. I would highly recommend an alignment when upgrading tires anyway.

Try another tire shop you may have defective tires, up-sized wheels also are easier to warp.
I have a bad vibration in my steering wheel at highway speeds?
the problem most likly is bad motor mounts

after a while the mounts that hold the engine in place crack or break since they are made out of rubber

so when your running fast the motor creates high torque and makes the vehicle shake a little

double check to make sure its not just mud or something stuck to the rim

also check your tires for bumps
It's your rocker panel; its what holds your motor in place... my car did the same thing and when I got it fixed it stopped. It's pretty cheap to fix. Contact your dealer to see how much...
    try a front wheel alignment
Could be a failing torque converter (automatic cars)...Could be a bent rim.

Could be a damaged tire, Could be %26quot;Blem%26quot; tires.

Lots of things can cause what you describe.
    if balance is good.........check alignment , shock,s/ strut,s, disc brake rotor,s [ for warped condition ] , wheel lug nut,s [ for proper torque ] , or any front steering / suspension part,s for wear/play.
Sounds like either a bad tierod end or bad ball joint. Either could cause it. the larger tires if they are larger than stock could amplify it making it noticeable now. You can take it to a front end alignment shop and they will check it out or u can do it yourself. Not that hard. But if either is changed you will definitely need a front end alignment afterwards. good luck
have you checked for any play in your suspension components ie ball joints, track rod ends, anti roll links

i would check these before going any further
power steering is off it hapened to me also need a new steering motor
it sounds like the tires themselves are separating in the tread (belt tread). have the tires rotated and if the vibration goes away or isn't as bad, then you know you need tires.

it may bee your ball joints worn
Try getting some camber kit. Some times when changing rims or lowering suspension the wheels will tilt inward or outward and causes alignment problems. I got 18s on my 98 civic coupe and it did the same thing. They cost about 150 for front and back each from Skunk2.

Sometimes the side walls of the tires break down and would cause a vibration. If this is so you may notice a bulge on the side of the tire. Also, you should have your tie rods and ball joints checked for wear. If you are a two foot driver (one foot on the accelerator and one on the break) your wheel disc may be warped from excessive breaking. If your struts are worn ( which is common in Japanese cars) your wheel will lift of the road causing it to %26quot;bounce%26quot;. this would feel like a vibration at high speeds. Then again I have had my tires balanced and they didn't do it correctly.

The Steering of my 4 Wheel Drive starts Shaking Heavily when I apply the Brakes (More........)?
your brake rotors on the front are probably warped... spelling -5. You can have them turned at a auto machine shop if not too far out of tolerence... other wise you need too buy new ones.

Luckly the price of them have come down over the years. Before you install new ones clean surface with engine/carb cleaner spray and rub with sand paper to remove mfg. coating and rough them up a bit. Wear protective gloves and change them often when handling chemicals as they seep through the gloves rather quickly and try not to get any on gloves or skin.... cancer making stuff...
The Steering of my 4 Wheel Drive starts Shaking Heavily when I apply the Brakes (More........)?
so which is it? 4 wheel drive or front wheel drive?

So you changed the pads, that's cool. Did you have the rotors machined? Or replace them with new rotors?

In a lot of cases, you can buy new rotors for only a couple dollars more than having them machined.
The rotors you have re shot--maybe they can be evened out by a brake shop--maybe the rotor is old and needs replacement--do it before yoiu ruin those NEW pads. You got to do the WHOLE job when you do brakes.
your brake rotors may be warped. or your ball joints or control arms may be worn. Most likely, its your rotors.

NO NO NO NO! You do not have to remove it. Remove the plastic shroud around the turn signals and ignition. Three screws. You will see the ignition lock cylinder that goes from black key potion underneath steering column and to a switch with a plug in the side. To remove the key portion, were most Cavalier problems occur, disconnect negative battery terminal, simply put key in ignition and turn to run, take a small short flat head screwdriver or equivalent an push into the hole on the back side of the metal casting for the ignition. Gently pull the ignition out and disconnect the three wire passkey connector from instrument cluster. Installation is reverse of removal. I have personally don this a bunch of times. Remember you must program the new ignition to the ECM. To do this you must connect the battery, turn key to run position for ten minutes until theft light goes out, turn key back to off but DO NOT REMOVE, then start the car. Good Luck.

your brake rotors on the front are probably warped... spelling -5.

  • I have a 1997 cavalier,do i have to take off my steering wheel in order to change my ignition?

Good Luck.
I have a 1997 cavalier,do i have to take off my steering wheel in order to change my ignition?
pretty much only way to replace it yes.. you sure thats whats wrong and not a battery problem like a battery cable
I have a 1997 cavalier,do i have to take off my steering wheel in order to change my ignition?
The air bag, the steering wheel, locking hub, signal switch, plus other things to get to that switch. Big job and special tools needed.
take it to a lock smith they will not pull off the wheel

Why does my steering wheel shake intermittently (like every 20-30 seconds) when I drive over 60mph?

I have a 1999 Hyundai Tiburon, its a manual transmission and I just recently fixed 2 flats on it. The tires were balanced at the shop before I put them on. Now when I drive over 60 mph my steering wheel shakes but not the whole time. It shakes about every 20-30 seconds. Also, my check engine light came on. I checked my engine coolant and it was really low so I put more in. Also I need to get an oil change asap...Could this maybe be the reason for the shaking?? Any ideas??
Why does my steering wheel shake intermittently (like every 20-30 seconds) when I drive over 60mph?
Your tires are out of balance. You can drive slower and they are OK and faster than the speed you mention and they are OK .Its just at this certain speed. As for your ck eng lt loosen your gas cap and then retighten it at least 3 cliks and restart eng
Why does my steering wheel shake intermittently (like every 20-30 seconds) when I drive over 60mph?
Have your vehicle inspected by a qualified professional.

If your tires are unbalanced, the vibration would occur consistently at a certian speed, not every 20-30 seconds.

A loose suspension component is the most likely culprit
have someone check your CV joints
Have your tires and wheels high speed balanced at a shop that does mostly tire work, (i.e. Firestone, Les Schwab, Goodyear, etc.) you may have lost one or more of the wheel weights. Low coolant levels and needing an oil change have nothing to do with the shacking you are feeling.
The oil change should not be cause of the shaking, that is probably the balance. You likely threw a weight. or you could have a tire going bad,you should have the shop check them and if it is not balance then have them check the suspension and so on. It is not good and can lead to bad tire wear and control problems under certain circumstances.
Sounds like either the tires or the wheel alignment.
Here is your answer for sure. You have a worn out ball joint.
Can't imagine why the coolant could cause the shaking. If your oil level is normal that shouldn't be it.

If the problem started with the change of tires. I would start there. You swap the tires to the back and see if that makes it go away.

I would also check the lug nuts make sure the wheels are indeed on tight. One wheel could be fluttering. Flutter is an instability and therefore may not be there at all times.

If you take the wheels and tires out of the equation I would look at the power steering pump.
either ur wheel alingment is off or u got a low tire it could b sumthin eles but doesnt sound like it have ur mechanic check it out
    you could need an alignment,

make sure the tires are all the same size, and inflated properly.
perhaps the tires are out of balance, to be safe I'd have it checked out.
check those tires look over real good maybe a weight come off or could be tire about to go
    CV Joint or wheel alignment
I would suggest rechecking getting you tires balanced. Sometime they don't do it correctly. For me they never do...
    Did you hit something like a curb etc. when you had the 2 flats?? maybe you bent a rim , Or maybe a wheel bearing ? %26quot;O%26quot;
Three reasons you may be getting the vibration are:

    1. Your wheels may be out of balance because some of the balance weights fell off. There is usually a weight on the outside of the rim where it is easy to see and one on the inside edge where you have to crawl under the car to see it.

    2. Your brake rotors are out of balance which means you will need to balance the tires on the car or replace the rotors.

    3. The tires may be damaged (not round or some belt separation), try putting the rear tires on the front and see if that helps.

The reason the vibration may not be occurring all the time is that the front tires may be different sizes due to different air pressures or they are different brands or models. If they rotate at different speeds, they will sometimes work together to shake the steering wheel when they are %26quot;in phase%26quot; and they will sometimes fight each other when they are %26quot;out of phase%26quot;. Even if they are the same size they can go in and out of phase due to driving around corners since the tire on the inside of the turn does not have to roll as far.

  • Why does my car shake, including the whole front of the car, tires and steering wheel, whenever I brake?

I have a toyota sienna, I just changed my tires and had it balanced. It feels like the car's tire is going to fall off everytime I brake.
Why does my car shake, including the whole front of the car, tires and steering wheel, whenever I brake?
    replace your rotors.

    they are bended

did you hit a sidewalk real hard recently?
Why does my car shake, including the whole front of the car, tires and steering wheel, whenever I brake?
    Warped rotors
Replace your rotors. They are warped
You need new rotors. That's what the brake shoes clamp on to to slow the wheels.
they didnt seat the new brake pads to the rotor properly
either they put the rim on backwards, chances are thatt the tires were not properly balanced. i had that problem with my truck. or it could be that your rotors need to be shaved or replaced.
those would be some really warped rotors. u probably want to take it in to see if suspension has some serious issues. bad tie rods comes to mind. with the car up in the air they can move tires left to right and see if suspension is worn out. it might just be the rotors but i wouldnt screw around and wait to find out.
what you got is called a brake pulsation. happens when braking, what your feeling is a shake felt in car you feel in brake pedal, steering wheel and seat. that is caused by a warped rotor.rotors now adays are cheaply built. usually throw away when bad when before you could machine them and make them fresh again. put a new set of pads and rotors on and it will go away. i recommend a dealer so you can use original equipment. i hope this helps
When the shop replaced the wheels they may not have torqued the lug nuts to the proper torque and your rotors may now be warped. It's a common problem.

Only if you install the proper steering wheel interface afterwards. If just installing a new radio, then no, they will not work.

First Jeep,89 wrangler, changed steering stabilizer, new tie-rod.Is there always a lot of play in the wheel?

No, worn track bar is common in wranglers, gear box may be worn as well.

To check the track bar, need someone in the Jeep to start the engine and turn the steering wheel back and forth while another person watch the joint of the track bar that attached to the frame on the driver's side.

If the joint pops up and down, it's worn. while driving, you have to turn the steering wheel a lot more than you should before the car responses.
First Jeep,89 wrangler, changed steering stabilizer, new tie-rod.Is there always a lot of play in the wheel?
Check where the bolts mount the rack bec the bushings might be worn out, have someone turn the wheel as you watch for access play etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.
First Jeep,89 wrangler, changed steering stabilizer, new tie-rod.Is there always a lot of play in the wheel?
Most likely is the track bar. Wear at the frame end is common and will cause these problems.

Also check for wear in the steering box. Check the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame while you are checking things.

Now,from someone who deals with cars everyday! Check CV axles for cracks in black boot. Turn wheel sharp all the way to one side, get out of car look at how you turned your wheels.see the black boot. Is it cracked?

Do the same to the other wheel! If both Cv axles are in good shape and no cracks,do this! Jack up the car on one side.with car jacked up and wheel still on,wiggle the wheel side to side(steering wheel locked) does it wobble? Could be spindle and Hub bearing!

Looks like you need to get wheel alignment done. Have the steering fluid level checked out. If the steering wheel wobbles while braking and makes a 'rubbing' sound, then you probably need your rotors resurfaced. Might also want to get the brake pads checked out while you're at it.

  • Can i switch a steering wheel?

i want to get a austin healey sprite (car from the uk) but the steering wheel is on the right.... can i change it to the left like in the usa .. how much wuld it cost ..about how much
Can i switch a steering wheel?
it would cost a lot , those cars are from 60s and maybe here in Uk parts are still available, but left hand drive parts, well, Im not too sure,

it is not too difficult to drive a right hand drive on your roads once you get used to doing so.

you would also have to get cylinder head modified if it hasnt been done so it runs on unleaded fuel if it hasnt been done.

they use a 1275 cc engine, or ealier ones were only 998 cc, so dont expect miracles , oh, 4 gears also, but no syncro on first.

other than that, a fun little car, not ultra reliable though,

hope I havnt elaborated too much,
Can i switch a steering wheel?
Actually, you might not have to change the steering wheel.

If the car is 25 years old (and it likely is) it can be imported and registered in most states without much hassle.

What most people end up doing to switch the steering wheel is to merge two cars together, called a 'clip' and it's expensive.

Need to know if i need to change my power steering belt for my acura?

ok so every time i move my steering wheel to the extreme right or left i get a loud noise. sometimes when i ride down the road i get a loud squeal. so what could this be? is it my power steering belt? could it be something else? i mean why do belts make noise? it has not rained to make this happen. so i don't know what's going on.

Need to know if i need to change my power steering belt for my acura?
It is power steering. Lift up the front of the car so that both the front wheels are above the ground. Start your car, open the power steering oil container lid,let it be a bit warm up, now turn the full steering to the right, keep it there for 4 to 7 seconds, now turn the steering to the full left, do this right and left 8 to 10 times.Close the lid, switch it off. I am sure now it should be alright. With this action actually you are pushing the air out which starts giving the squeaking noise.
Need to know if i need to change my power steering belt for my acura?
Belts do wear out over time. The squealing could be a belt which is either worn out or just needs adjusting or it could be a bad pump. Have a mechanic check it out.
Typically it is low on fluid when this happens. Check the level in the power steering reservoir. If it is empty or low. check around the reservoir, the pump and steering rack for signs of wetness (leak). that would narrow down the components(s) that are failing. The belt on the ribbed side should have no cracking/missing ribs/etc... If you need to replace it most likey maintenence is good, but not cause of noise.
    its a piece of rubber...it wears and gets dried out and cracks...some have belt tensioners which rust up and don't keep it tight...also...you got fluid in that thing..[PS reservoir}
Most nowadays have one serpentine belt that drives everything, air conditioner compressor, water-pump, alternator, belt idlers, belt tensioner and power-steering pump. Have the belt changed or change it yourself. If the belt still squeals, the belt tensioner needs replacement or the power-steering pump is last on the list of things to replace.

Serpentine belts should be replaced every 50,000 miles.

    Steering wheel shake... brakes ?????

well.. i know it is a brakes problem and i know that i have to change them... whenever i hit the brakes when i am driving, the steering wheel shakes bad.. but i wanna know what exactly is the problem.. is it a pad problem?? a rotor problem??? both??? is there a way i can fix them without changing them since i think they are ok ???

please let me know ... thanks
    Steering wheel shake... brakes ?????
The brake surfaces needs to be absolutely flat. Sometimes they become warped. You can have the brake surfaces (machined). But if you do the brake job yourself, it is almost the same price to just buy replacement rotors / pads.

Just replace them (or go for a brake job).
    Steering wheel shake... brakes ?????
rotors are warped, take to brake place and have them machined and get new pads is the only way to fix this. Be sure and break the new pads in properly as well when they are back on the car.
I had the same problem recently - mine was a rotor problem. If you've had your brake pads replaced or done it yourself, the rotors may not have been turned, which would be the cheapest solution. Many places will check it out and give you an estimate at no cost.
like the other guys said, its warped rotors.. you can either get them turned at a shop or some parts stores do it, or you can just buy new ones, but since you say that yours shake really really bad i suggest getting new rotors and pads
sounds like your rotors are warped, they are easy to replace.
The rotors are probably warped due to heat...

If your car has some weight to it I would suggest a higher grade rotor and ceramic pad... More expensive but.

Everytime i turn my steering wheel, my car squeaks really loudly and i'm wondering why this would happen?

2002 ford focus, just changed oil, 94,000 miles
Everytime i turn my steering wheel, my car squeaks really loudly and i'm wondering why this would happen?
If it is squeeling, you may need some power steering fluid. Make sure you check under your car periodically or for the next few days for any type of leaking as this can be a result of a bad steering pump.

If it is just squeeking whenever you turn the wheel hard and at slow speeds, you may just need some air or new tires.

Have one try to check the front wheels tyre air pressure?

    Screeching on cornering?

    What do you think?
You need a new power steering belt. The old one is slipping.
It also MIGHT be your steering rack. My car was doing the same thing and thats what it was. I would have them check that out
do you have enough power steering fluid
    power steering fluid low.
It could be the power steering belt is slipping...

I have a 1997 Infiniti I30 143k miles and the steering wheel is difficult to turn.?

It does it first thing in the morning when it cool out or if its been sitting a long time and its cool/cold out. Also, its only difficult when making turns around a corner, not slight turning like when driving on the road. The difficulty feels like a stutter, not a constant force. I don't hear any noise except the squeak you hear when you turn you wheel all the way to one side or the other. Also, I've changed the power steering fluid as well. Everything else feels find. One, one more thing, and i don't know if this is related or not but i went to get an alignment done and the guy said there was no point b/c there was something wrong and it would just go back to pulling to one side.
I have a 1997 Infiniti I30 143k miles and the steering wheel is difficult to turn.?
The brake power booster could be bad. The power steering pump could be bad, The rack and pinion could be bad.. As far as the alignment goes did he say what was wrong? Bad tie rods? Bad struts?

    loose or old belt maybe

and what did the guy say was bad with front end and why didnt he fix it
If the fluid level is good, and you have the proper fluid in the pump, the next thing to do is change the serpentine belt that drives everything under the hood.

I'm experiencing very loud vibrating/rumbling noises on my Renault Laguna when driving and steering what is it
It sounds to me like a wheel bearing.

Take the car back to who ever replaced the breaks and tell them what is happening , Maybe they will put it up on the rack and could spot the problem , Remember they only did the breaks and did not look for anything else , Could be shocks ,Tie roads ends ect. good luck

Cause?
Most of the time on front drive cars the stabalizer bushings are the culprit.

sounds like you may have a bearing problem.... i know a lot of ppl who experience this after a rotor change.... happen to get the smallest pc of dirt in the bearing, and voila.... baearing sushi.... while your car is sitting on a level surface (close anyways) straighten your wheels, and then jump out and grab the tire. pull it towards and away from you (shake it back and forth) and see if you get a noise close to the one you hear while driving... if so... you need top change your wheel bearings..... make sure you check both sides
jack it up check for worn or missing rubber bushings

Might also weant to get your car alligned and have them check your CV joints. Cars in northern areas have issues with CV joints. Ask your mechanic to see if you car has had any accidents - it may be that. Good luck!
I have a bad vibration in my steering wheel at highway speeds?
it may bee your ball joints worn
Try getting some camber kit. Some times when changing rims or lowering suspension the wheels will tilt inward or outward and causes alignment problems. I got 18s on my 98 civic coupe and it did the same thing. They cost about 150 for front and back each from Skunk2.

    Try jazzproparts.com

When i am going at a speed of 60 mph, and apply brakes to reduce the speed of the car, the steering shakes a lot. I aligned the tyres and also changed the Brake Pads of the Front Wheel (the car is Front Wheel Drive). What could be the possible problem...

  • I have a 1997 cavalier,do i have to take off my steering wheel in order to change my ignition?

Good Luck.

What causes whining sound when steering wheel is turned?

I have a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII with 156K miles. I took it to the Dealer this morning to get an oil change and I was going to have the power steering fluid changed as well because it has problems during the cold weather. The power steering won't work until it warms up. However I decided to get a diagnostic run on it to determine why it makes a loud whining noise when I turn the steering wheel. The lady that worked at the service center said that it should not sound that loud. I am still waiting to hear from them as to what may be wrong and how much it may cost. I would like to know what the yahoo pros have to say about it so I can be well informed.

    Any help is appreciated. =)
What causes whining sound when steering wheel is turned?
First check your fluid level then check to make sure all belts are tight if this still persists you may need a new power steering pump
What causes whining sound when steering wheel is turned?
    the fluid is low
Check your power steering fluid. If you've never done that, you've probably already caused some damage to the power steering rack.

If you have checked it, ensure there is enough in the reservoir (look for the markings on the container itself). If there isn't enough, buy some high-mileage fluid and add until you have enough. If you already have enough, go to a mechanic.

Do I have to change out the steering column to repair the linkage to the automatic transmission?

I have a 1971 Ford F250 automatic transmission pick up truck. The transmission lever on the steering wheel no longer works. I manually switched the gears by hand under the truck and it appears to go into gear in the transmission. I'm 99% sure the problem lies within the steering column.

I have never fixed a problem like this before. My question is, will I need to replace the steering column or is it possible to remove, fix, and replace the broken parts within the steering column. If it is possible to fix the problem without getting a new steering column will I be able to fix it while leaving the steering column in place.
Do I have to change out the steering column to repair the linkage to the automatic transmission?
yes they make all the parts you need to re-build that steering column with ,but you will have to remove it to get to all of it,id re-build the whole thing it only cost around 80 bucks to put everything new in it,and this will take care of it,you can go to this web site for parts they have all the parts you,ll need, its lmctrucks.com.type it in ,its a good site, good luck with it.

I changed a wheel bearing on my 2000 saturn i didnt move tire rod ends at all, after i put it back together?
DO NOT move the steering wheel. That is totally wrong. The rack is designed for 'center feel' in the center. The tie rods are designed to be parallel to the lower control arms on center. Don't mess with that. That's not supposed to be changed.

Now, I don't really know what you did that changed it - the bearing shouldn't change the alignment at all. You may want to double check the installation of the bearing to the hub, to see if all the bolts pulled it up completely. I don't know what else to tell you.

As you know, the tie rods can both be adjusted to set it on center, but it bothers me that it ever got off center.

  • When bleeding the power steering fluid in a car, do you keep the reservoir cap open or closed?

I changed power steering fluid in my Toyota Tacoma 2000, then bleed the air out of the new fluid. I bleed by turning steering wheel right to left and left to right a few times. But when you are turning the steering wheel to bleed the fluid, you keep the p/s resevoir open or closed? If you keep it open, dirt and debris could go inside the reservoir. but if you keep it closed, the air may not be bled out of the fluid. Anyone got an idea? Thanks
When bleeding the power steering fluid in a car, do you keep the reservoir cap open or closed?
Keep it closed...unless you want power steering fluid all over your engine! Big air bubbles coming out of the lines will make the fluid spray hard in the resevoir and most like get all over the engine, belts, paint, etc...

Keeping the cap on is just fine...it does make it go slower, but it beats cleaning up fluid....just keep checking the fluid levels.
When bleeding the power steering fluid in a car, do you keep the reservoir cap open or closed?
I believe you keep it open. If it were closed then it would make it incredibly difficult to suck out the fluid. As long as there is no obvious debris near the reservoir you should be fine with the cap off. Bleed it like you bled the brake fluid.
i bled mine after changing the rack and pinion, never left the cap open, just checked it now and then to make sure it was full
leave it off so the air can escape.

guide for replacing the steering rack gaiter.

    remove the road wheel

remove the split pin on track rod end

crack off the 17 mm lock nut

undo the 17 mm castle nut on the track rod end

un wind the track rod end counting how many turns

undo the cable tie and spring clip securing the gaiter

replace gaiter and refit all bit in the reverse order recountiong the threads as you refit the track rod end.

the wheel bearings are not adjustable and i would not consider this a diy job.

if you book the car into a garage expect to pay

    0.5 hr for rack gaiter

2.0 hr for a front wheel bearing

0.5 hr for a rear wheel bearing

    btw

15 years mitsi experience i have never needed to replace a space wagon wheel bearing so would suspect any play in yours might be a ball joint.

After coming off highway or lots of city driving oil, light turns on when i turn steering wheel all the way?
The only way to know for sure if your oil pressure is truly too low as is being indicated by the red dash oil light is to have a shop hook up a professional oil pressure gauge directly to your engine and measure the oil pressure at hot engine idle when it's the lowest. It should be at least 12 psi. If not, you might need a new oil pump. Of course your hoping it's a faulty oil pressure sensor which is a low cost repair to replace while your at the shop.

After coming off highway or lots of city driving oil, light turns on when i turn steering wheel all the way?
    Definately Gremlins im afraid.
low oil. eletrical short on oil light.low oil pressure.wrong oil grade.???
not enough oil is in your crankcase...check your oil... The viscosity of your oil gets thinner when it's hot and at an idle it drops slightly below safe oil pressure...when your turning your adding enough stress to your engine that it sends a low pressure light...

have this checked out as continuous low pressure can cause premature engine failure...

The reason it seems good as new when it's cold is the oil starts out thicker, but becomes thinner as it gets hot...

This whole problem may be it just is short some oil....

No need to remove the steering wheel, you need to remove the column covers and you should be then able to undo the bolts holding the stalk assembly and change it.

Is it sort of a %26quot;buzzing%26quot; sound? When fully turned, it is possibly %26quot;sucking air, - the buzzing noise is air and fluid going trough together! If the oil (PD fluid) is low, it fills the %26quot;rack%26quot; up - and then is too low for pump to be submerged in fluid- %26quot;fancy name%26quot; for this is %26quot;cavitating%26quot;! Possibly it wasn't totally filled when you had recent maitainance done? Keep %26quot;tabs%26quot; on fluid level for a while, - if you need to add often, you probably have a leak somewhere, - you may be able to see where,- by looking over all the hoses etc..

Did you turn the steering wheel hard left an or/ hard right when

you tried to turn the key. Sometimes it gets locked in pretty tight,

once again, especially if you're on a hill.

If that doesn't help, make sure you didn't bend the key somehow

if you used it to pry something or something of that nature.

Just slightly turn the steering wheel then turn the key... lol happens to me all the time
Is it an automatic parked on a hill, the trans is jammed against a shift band, have someone push the car a few inches, do it yourself with a wheel chuck just enuff to release the pressure on the trans.

    It happened to me.

It sounds like the wheels weren't balanced when the tyres were changed.

sounds like they need ballancing ! they should have done this as part of the tyre fitting ? other than that your wheel could be buckled after having tyres fitted by incompitant fitter ??
probably knocked the tracking out. Go back and complain. they should fix it for free.
All new tyres need to be balanced by the tyre fitter before you drive the car, it sounds like yours haven't been. Take it back as soon as possible as driving it is dangerous.
check your wheel nuts have been tightened properly.if it is doing it when you are braking your brake disc's are warped but if its doing it all the time it could be a ball joint or something and the fact its happening now is a coincidence
Have them balanced, if you don't you will cause excessive wear to other very expensive parts (ball joints, tie rods, etc.)
Wheels need balancing after fitting new tyres, which they either haven't done or haven't done properly. Just give the wheels a vigorous yanking to and fro to check that the silly burgers haven't left the nuts loose. All okay?

Then it'll be fine for the time being, albeit irritating, so drive gently until you get back to them; if you left 'em like that eventually they'd cause accelerated wear to the suspension and steering components
sounds like the person who changed them didn't balance them, or if they did they were done badly
You need to get the wheels balanced.

It costs more when having a tyre changed but should always be done to keep stop the wheels from vibrating.
Sounds like they forgot to balance the wheels after they changed the tires. Easy fix - shouldn't cost you anything since they should have done it when you were in the first time.
