Gear lever on steering wheel?

ive seen these in a lot of american cars. where the gear shift is on the side of the steering wheel. what type of gear change is that?

on a newer vehicle the gear selector is for an automatic transmission. On some older vehicles, it could have been a manual.

Column, as opposed to a floor box. they are only used in automatics unless you have a paddle shifter on the steering column.

Number ONE responder is correct. There was a time when most American car and trucks had the gearshift on the column.

In the 1930's, 40's and 50's a lot of them were three speed manual gear shifts. As time progressed more and more of them were automatics. I am not aware of a single manufacturer that still utilizes a column mounted manual shifter but many North American trucks still have the auto shifter on the column.
