Steering wheel shakes when braking?

i have a honda civic 96, i'v been experiencing a shake in the steering wheel when i brake at 50/40MPH. had the disks and pads changed and had balancing done on both front wheels but the problem still exists... help anyone?

It sounds like your rotors are warped, I know you said you had them changed, or at least I *think* you meant rotors...not sure

That's all I could think it could be unless you have a knot in one of your tires, but you'd notice it at acceleration more than braking.

If you had someone change the brake rotors for you, then obviously they swapped you with some worn/used brake rotors.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy new brake rotors yourself at $20 a piece ($40 for 2). If you can change this yourself, that would be ideal. Just jack up your car onto jackstands, remove the wheel, remove the caliper, the caliper mount, and the old brake rotor.

Otherwise, bring it to a trusted shop and watch them put in your brake rotors. Mark it with a fat red marker on the surface if you have to. Also, have them use new screws to tighten the new brake rotors onto the hub.

If this resolves your problem, look into getting a refund for the brake rotors you purchased...and consider never going there again for repairs - learn how to fix it yourself.

Good luck!
possible its your outer or iner tie rod ends

check this by jacking up the front till tires are off the ground, grab front and back side of tire

when looking at tire grab at 3o'clock and 9o'clock

shake tire if there is play determine if its the outer or inner that you need to change
Worn tie rods and/or worn ball joints could produce this behavior. Get them checked, if one breaks loose when breaking at speed you could very suddenly loose steering control. If you had the break work done at a professional shop they should have checked that but you can never be sure if you didn't ask.
It sounds to me like it is time to turn or replace your brake rotors...from braking and brake heat the rotors become warped enough to cause this to happen...a glaze and shiny surfaced rotor is usually only visible way of knowing,,and of coarse vibrating while applying brakes...
idk if that's a front wheel drive but if it is check ur cv axels they could be loose or going bad
i had that problem bout a month or two ago and was a torn belt in one of my tires. started off with a little shaking but turn in to the whole front end shaking...had me freaked out
You need to either resurface or replace the front brake rotors
Cherk your ball Joint and tie Rods and Steering box bush, replace anyone if damaged
