Why does my steering wheel judder from side to side?

while driving ,my steering wheel started juddering from side to side, after changing to spare, problem still there, took car to garage got wheels balanced but still there. seems to ease off over 40mph
Why does my steering wheel judder from side to side?
could be your tracking. If you have changed to your spare it would mean your tyre had something wrong, if it was worn on one side then get your tracking checked.
Why does my steering wheel judder from side to side?
one or both of your front wheels are buckled...if there not to bad you can get the ballanced at a tyre shop.

EDIT...

answers that say its the tracking...its NOT!...tracking is the angle of the wheels...its nothing to do with a wheel wobbling, they need ballancing.
ALIGNMENT REQUIRED
if you go to kwick fit they will sort it out only be 拢20 (TRACKING)
loose steering wheel?
you forgot to get a wheel alignment

check it out
Sounds like a balancing problem but it could be a buckled wheel, damaged tyre, worn steering joint. Have it checked be a good garage.
Tire cupping will cause your vehicle and steering wheel to sway from left to right. Go take a look at your front tires. With your hand feel the tread of the tires, if you see or feel the tires have uneven spots then your tires are cupped.

Please vote for the right answer.
something is wrong with one or both of your front wheels. Probably been knocked on a kurb or parked on uneven ground for too long or something like that. It can easily be fixed for a price obviously. Im surprise your garage didnt find the problem and fix it. Over 40mph the rotation is so great and the juddering so common that you wouldnt notice it which is why it eases off. (like the faster you go over a rumble strip, the less you feel it) I would take it to a different garage(s) and get second opinions.

hope this helps
Definitely sounds like a buckled or out of balanced wheel(s).

But you can test for other causes like below.

Park the car and put the steering wheel lock on.

Leaving the cars wheels on the road.

Grab a road wheel at the top of the tyre and try to rock the wheel towards you any knocking or play will indicate a loose wheel bearing.

Hold the road wheel on left and right sides(9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position).

Rocking the tyre in and out as if trying to make the wheel steer will indicate a worn steering ball joint.

Rocking the wheel as if trying to rotate the wheel will indicate a worn bottom ball joint.
If you had the wheels balanced properly then there will be no buckled wheel because that would show up on the balancer.Possible problem if you have power steering is the valves in the steering rack and pinion
FAULTY SPARE TYRE CHANGE THE TYRE steering was ok before
Tie rods are bad.
As per previous answers there are a number of possible problems such as loose steering components and faulty rims and tyres.

To check the rims/tyres, you can jack up the front wheels one at a time, and spin them, then hold your hand against the tyre lightly as they spin. The tyre should run evenly around under your fingers, if it moves up and down at all, suspect dents in the rims (particularly the insides if they are alloy wheels) or faulty tyres. Also look carefully at the tread to see if the depth is even all the way around the tyre, tyres can come apart and bulge and this bulge will wear more than the rest of the tyre, you will feel it as a bump under your hand as the tyre is rotating, and means the tyre needs replacing.

The other check is to drive slowly down the road at a speed where you can feel the wheel judder, and then press gently on the brake pedal, adding some power to keep your speed up if necessary. If the feel changes significantly with braking, get your car checked for warped brake discs.

How do you fix a loose steering wheel?

i've had a loose steering wheel for a while. When driving down the road i have to keep moving the steering wheel slightly from side to side to go straight. i was told to change all these parts. I just had the steering box, tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and ball joints replaced. After everything was done, i got an alignment, but i still have the same problem. what could be the problem???? any help will be very useful.
How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
Smith sounds about right. I would check the air pressure in the tires as well, (do it yourself) that will make allot of difference if they are under pressure and they may not look it. There is also a nut and bolt on the top of older cars (i'm not sure if the new ones still have it) steering box that will take out excess slack in side to side movement in steering. But you need someone who knows what he is doing and someone you trust. Machanics take advantage of people every day, espeailly WOMEN.
How do you fix a loose steering wheel?
huh - maybe where the steering column connects to the steering box is messed up? Maybe just down by the brake pedal?
or it might also be your allignment

or even your tires

but i think its most likely steering wheel or allignment

get it checked by a professional
You need to adjust the steering box for tightness
It sounds like either you need a sportier car or a smaller steering wheel (an aftermarket one, but that would normally require removing your air bag)

Loose steering wheels are inherent in some cars that are deemed as family sedans. If you drive a luxery family sedan, you're even more out of luck.

If you've replaced all that stuff and the steering still feels loose, I'd say it really doesn't get any better.
im a mechanic for conrads total car care thay sold you alot of **** you didnt need . sue them . all you need is to replace the swivel u joint style knuckle on the stearing shaft . you got jued.
in a lot of older cars the steering is loose. what year/make car do you have? check the power steering fluid and belt. if your father or friend knows about cars get one of them to look at it. but if it's an older car it's just going to have loose steering.

I have a problem changing the gears in my car and turning the steering wheel. ?

Okay I have a 1994 Geo Prizm I think that's like an early Honda or something like that ( Don't quote me on it - I never really cared about cars)

Anyways I have a problem when I switch gears (its an automatic so I don't know if that's the right term), I was backing out of a spot - just fine and when I put it in drive and turned the steering wheel to go in the direction I wanted I could barely move the steering wheel. Its like it locked up or something, It happens when either I am parrell parking or just pulling out the driveway.

Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is? How could I fix it?

Also, I took the window tint of the window. But the glue is still on the window and it leaves a whole bunch of glue lines (lol - I don't know what to call it) all over window when I roll it down. What is the best way to remove the lines?

The Geo either doesn't have Power Steering, or if it does, it's pretty basic, like the Geo itself.

When you dont have power steering, it's harder to turn the car at slow speeds than at high speeds. I have an older Mazda like that.

Think of it this way...you're getting some exercize for your arms while driving...a bonus!

sounds to me like the power steering rack has given up or something is the matter with the power steering

About my Steering Wheel?

I got a Honda Civic Hatchback 1998 Model and the steering wheel has srs airbag. I was just wandering if i could change the steering wheel too make my car look better? thanks =D
About my Steering Wheel?
On any car you could change the steering wheel too make it look better, but be careful with the air bag you have to disconnect the fuse first.
About my Steering Wheel?
There are a number of companies that make aftermarket steering wheels (rims only, as well as complete steering wheels), so that you can keep the centre part that has the airbag. They still look pretty good, plus you still have the safety of keeping the airbag installed.

Good luck!
of course you can but it depends on wat kind of steering wheel some dont have an air bag but im preety sure your dealership should have a few stock wheels for you to choose from but i would talk to them first to get their opion on the situation.
Yes, but make SURE, you disconnect the battery FIRST and then the wires going to the airbag or you could get unured taking it out. A Hayne's repair manual will tell you how to do it step by step.

  • Can I rewire my steering wheel control to my CD player?

I have a ford focus and recently took out the existing tape player and put in a Kenwood CD player with AUX. It's much better but my existing stereo was hooked up to a control on my steering wheel whereby I could change the volume, skip tracks etc. What I'm wondering is whether it's possible to wire my Kenwood stereo into that?

    Thanks in advance
Can I rewire my steering wheel control to my CD player?
You need to buy an adaptor from somewhere like Halfords if one is available for your combination of head and car, sometimes they are not.

It is not a simple case of rewiring - there is more to it.

The adaptor if availabe could be as much as 拢80 but some are cheaper.

Other good car audio specialists will also be able to sell you one - if they are available.
Can I rewire my steering wheel control to my CD player?
Yes you can,you will need one of these.

    PAC SWI-JACK

    http://www.crutchfield.com/p_127SWIJACK/鈥?/a>
    You can use the SWI-Jack

Here's a tutorial for a SWI-alp in a Chevy but it should be similar.
you should be fit to get a %26quot;stalk control%26quot; adapter if one is available for your car and CD player.

Just connects at back of your CD player.

Steering wheel shakes on my 308 over 70mph only started doing it after changing are front tires.been relined?

go to a tyre garage and have them rebalanced simple really
Steering wheel shakes on my 308 over 70mph only started doing it after changing are front tires.been relined?
its wheel balance, usually if you have an out of balance wheel you will feel it at 45 mph if its on front, 70 on rear, but if really well out of balance, lower speeds too,

    basically, get those wheels balanced.
Steering wheel shakes on my 308 over 70mph only started doing it after changing are front tires.been relined?
bolg tire mean the tire surface is not even, also could be a bent rim would also do that i'll say check trhe tread too and roll the tire on the ground see if it get funky looks. been a mechanic for almost 10 years sine i was 16.good luck . also to be sure install ur spare tire to make sure it's the tire /
    so rebalance tires,,,,
I agree re-balance the tyres....unless...some of the wheel-nuts are loose !!! Check before driving again !
    Balance the wheels
as everyone else has said, re-balance the wheels.
The UK maximum speed limit is 70mph. Why are you going over that to find a fault? Stay below 70 and keep legal, no shaking, problem solved. Especially in the foul weather we are having at the minute.
either they didn't get the tires balanced right or you got a defective tire.
Go to a tire shop and ask if they will check the air in your tires for free. Otherwise, it could need the tires balanced.

Does anyone know how to connect a horn on a after-market steering wheel to a 200sx s14?

I have recently brought an after-market steering wheel for my 200sx and cannot seem to attach the horn to the new steering wheel, I think I might need to change the wires that the horn runs on but are completely unsure any help would be amazing.
Does anyone know how to connect a horn on a after-market steering wheel to a 200sx s14?
You need a horn button kit it normally has one wire that connects to the stock wire and it then goes to the new horn button and grounds when the horn button is pushed
Does anyone know how to connect a horn on a after-market steering wheel to a 200sx s14?
Where would i find a horn button kit?

aftermarket steering already equipped with horn terminal at the button switch..remove the center cover in the center of the steering wheel. there should be terminal on it. plug the existing horn wire to the horn button.

what you should worry is the attachment for your airbag if it is equipped .
it depends on the steering wheel , u might have to get a new horn button , and modify it to fit the steering wheel , has the same issue with my 180sx .
