Is it safe to adjust the steering wheel height?

since my focus did not come with adjustable steering wheel, i opened it and adjusted it myself. the car turns perfectly and its not jumpy at all but the steering wheel seems harder and if i change lanes it'll stay in that direction, it wont line back up like it did before. is this safe?
Is it safe to adjust the steering wheel height?
probably not, the reason it's not lining up straight after you change lanes is due to the joints used to change the direction of the steering shaft input... they're meant to be at a certain range of angles, and if you adjusted it too far (which it sounds like you did) it will cause excessive friction within the u-joints of the steering shaft. while you do have power steering, and it's not necessary to have the steering column directly linked to the front wheels, it's designed as a fail safe so that if your power steering fails you always have a way to steer the car, if that u-joint fails due to excessive friction and you get a leak in your power steering fluid, or your pump burns out, your stuck going whichever directions the physics of the road decide to take you, which could be into a fire hydrant, or another vehicle, and you might not realize it in time to brake... recommend putting it back where the factory had it, and adjusting the seat to make it more comfortable, or buying a car with a tilt wheel.
