What is the name of the stick on a steering wheel that allows you to put the car in park?

Hi!

Can the mechanics on this forum (or anyone else who has knowledge of cars) help me?

I need to know the name (or names-- technical and slang) of the stick that comes off the steering wheel column that allows you to put your automobile in park, drive, etc.

Also, if you know the name of the stick which allows you to park, switch gears, etc. in a manual transmission vehicle, please list that as well.

:)

One more thing-- for those who know a lot about the history of cars...

Have the names of these %26quot;sticks%26quot; changed since the invention of the automobile? I mean, is the technical/slang name of the %26quot;stick%26quot; in a automobile the same now as it was throughout the history of the automobile. If not, what was the name of the %26quot;stick%26quot; in the 1930's and 1940's?

Thanks...
